Help with shadowing

Well I just tried to shadow a picture I did of Garra from Naruto but it came out rather poorly. I tired to use charcoals but it was my first time ever doing so. If anyone who reads this and knows how to shadow well please give me some pointers as to how I could those better or if I should like use pencils or something else to shadow properly?

Well, you can get great results with simple pencil too. :) Just start with a soft tone and gradually add more contrasts on the shadowed parts. It's mostly a matter of patience and details. I hope it helps :aww:
